Ferocious superstorm Sandy lashed with the northeastern United States early this morning, leaving millions in the dark as intense winds downed trees and powerlines and sent effective storm surges, as high as almost 14 feet in New York City, into the streets. Sandy was reduced from a hurricane to a post-tropical storm shortly before it made landfall at 8 p.m. in Atlantic City, N.J., on Monday, nonetheless the huge and effective storm still proved to be lethal. A minimum of 13 deaths in the United States were blamed on the storm, according to The Associated Press. 5 deaths were reported in New York, featuring 3 children in Westchester County just north of New York City.
