Rambling over primitive coastal trails, a team reached a dock that evidently drifted from Japan after last year's tsunami and simply cleaned ashore on a Washington beach, and an authorities said the group found Japanese writing inside the framework. The team of tsunami debris experts is trying to confirm that the dock is from Japan and wandered for even more than a year before winding up on among the most remote beaches on the U.S. West Coast. The team did not find an identifying plaque like the one found on a dock that cleaned ashore last June at Newport, Ore. , said Kim Schmanke, a spokeswoman for the state Ecology Department. That dock was confirmed as debris from the March 2011 Japanese tsunami.

Sudanese authorities say they have captured an Israeli spy in the town of Kereinek, but Israeli authorities have cast doubt on the claim, noting that the alleged Mossad agent is covered in feathers and weighs less than 30 pounds. Officials in the North African country are calling a large bird captured late last week an "Israeli spy vulture," according to Middle Eastern media reports. The online edition of the Egyptian daily El Balad said the raptor was fitted with solar-powered equipment that can broadcasts information, including satellite images. The report states a GPS tracker was also installed. Iran's Press TV reported that the Sudanese security services believe the vulture was dispatched on its mission from Jerusalem's Hebrew University.

Officials say 336,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the waters between Staten Island and New Jersey after a storage tank was lifted and ruptured from the surge from Sandy. All of the spilled fuel is believed to be contained by booms put in the Arthur Kill waterway, the Coast Guard says. The liquid leaked at the Motiva oil tank facility in Woodbridge, N.J., according to authorities.
