Christine Schleppy, 34, was only 35 weeks into her pregnancy when she started having contractions on Monday near the height of the storm. When they became more frequent around 6 p.m., her husband called 911 and an ambulance arrived. “You hope you can get to the hospital,” David Schleppy, 38, said. “We knew there were many trees down and roads getting closed left and right. ” Their home in Skillman, N.J., was not in an evacuation zone but the EMTs struggled to drive the Schleppy family to a hospital in Princeton amid flooding, debris and road closures. Ultimately, the ambulance became stuck in the mud, so the parents-to-be were switched to the fire ambulance that was leading the way. Despite having five children between the two of them, it was an anxiety-ridden experience for the couple. “It was definitely stressful,” he said.

The wave or rise was tape-recorded at 4 inches, much smaller sized than projection, stated Jeremy Zidek, a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The U.S. Geological Survey stated the 7. 7-magnitude earthquake struck in the Queen Charlotte Islands location, followed by a 5. 8-magnitude aftershock a number of minutes later. The quake was felt in Craig and other southeast Alaska neighborhoods, but Zidek stated there were no immediate reports of damage. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center released a caution for seaside areas of southeast Alaska, down the western Canadian coast to the idea of Vancouver Island. Later on Saturday night, the warning for those areas was devalued to an advisory, while a caution was released for Hawaii. Officials stated a tsunami wave can hit the islands by 10:30 p.m. Saturday (1:30 a.m. PDT).

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is tracking the male and female panthers, who were outfitted with radio collars. The panthers have not traveled far from their pen, and are still on White Oak property, according to FWC spokeswoman Karen Parker. Parker told ABC News affiliate WJXX that officials are continuously monitoring their location and working to return them safely to their enclosure. The 2-year-old panthers were trapped by the staff at the conservation in Florida center when they were 5 months old after their mother died. The staff had hoped to release the panthers back into the wild later this winter, according to Kipp Frohlich, head of the Imperiled Species Management Section at the FWC. Their pens at the center are very secluded to ensure they have little contact with people.

Officials say 336,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the waters between Staten Island and New Jersey after a storage tank was lifted and ruptured from the surge from Sandy. All of the spilled fuel is believed to be contained by booms put in the Arthur Kill waterway, the Coast Guard says. The liquid leaked at the Motiva oil tank facility in Woodbridge, N.J., according to authorities. Read more stories on NBCNewYork. com Follow @NBCNewsUS Coast Guard spokesman Les Tippets says a secondary tank caught most of the fuel and that the liquid that escaped moved into the Arthur Kill. EAST HAMPTON, N.Y.-- Marine officials say two whales washed up on New York's Long Island simply hours apart. One was dead and the various other was later euthanized. Newsday states they were discovered Sunday on separate stretches of East Hampton beaches. The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation said they don't think the two occasions are linked. The first whale was discovered dead around 8 a.m. in Napeague. Officials say there were no outward signs of what could have caused the death of the 59-foot-long finback whale. At around 2:30 p.m., officials got a report of a 5-foot-long adolescent pygmy sperm whale in nearby Amagansett. The foundation states it was euthanized because it had skin lesions and appeared "sickly.". Necropsies will be executed on both mammals on Monday.

Error blamed in strip club blast

Excerpt:

(CNN) -- Human error is to blame in last week's gas-fueled explosion that ripped through a strip club in the western Massachusetts city of Springfield, officials said Sunday. The blast injured at least 21 people, including firefighters. A utility worker, responding to a report of a gas odor inside a building, inadvertently punctured a hole in a high-pressure gas line at the foundation of that building, according to a statement from the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Markings on the sidewalk incorrectly indicated where the line was. Once the pipe was punctured, the worker called the gas company and the fire department to shut off the gas, and the area around the building was evacuated. Investigators believe gas from the leak entered the building and later ignited. "They (investigators) have determined that human error as opposed to a fault of the gas infrastructure provided the fuel for the explosion.
