Kepler Mission Manager Update
The Kepler team finished another regular monthly science information download over August 29-30, 2012. This marked the completion of Quarter 14 month 2 science information collection. Because the obvious failure of response wheel # 2 in mid-July, the spacecraft's efficiency has been outstanding while operating 3 reaction wheels. While still undetermined, the response wheel is thought to have actually suffered an internal hardware failure and is likely irrecoverable. Analysis of telemetry will continue, but additional troubleshooting is not anticipated on the wheel unless further issues call for. At the same time, engineers are taking actions to assure the continued efficiency of the remaining 3 wheels. A number of reducing features have actually been prepared, and some currently implemented to assure continued operation of the remaining reaction wheels.
