On Monday, Sandy brought heavy rain, winds and storm rises to the Northeast, causing widespread flooding and considerable damage to hundreds of communities, especially in New Jersey and New York. However the drenching from all that water varied greatly by region. This video is based upon forecasts published hourly by the National Digital Forecast Database. In locations south of Atlantic City, N.J., where the storm made landfall Monday night, the wind was projecting towards the ocean. This avoided high storm tides along the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware coastlines and in Chesapeake Bay. However the same arm of the storm that held the ocean at bay held a lot of rain. Some parts of Maryland saw 12. 5 inches of rain as Sandy travelled through, according to the National Weather Service.
