ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. Superstorm Sandy pounded into the New Jersey shoreline with 80 mph winds Monday evening and hurled an extraordinary 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City, threatening its subways and the electrical system that powers Wall Road. At least 10 deaths were condemned on the storm, which brought the governmental campaign to a halt a week before Election Day. Sandy knocked senseless power to a minimum of 3. 1 million people, and New York's primary energy stated huge areas of Manhattan were plunged into darkness. Water pushed into the island from three sides. Simply before its center reached land, the storm was stripped of hurricane status, however the distinction was purely technical, based on its shape and internal temperature.
