New York City lost almost 10,000 trees from the winds of Superstorm Sandy and the Nor'easter that followed. That's far more than any other storm in the city in which tree damage was recorded. Walking through Central Park, Ken Chaya peers past a stone arch, observing the damage and uprooting of about 800 trees from the storms. He knows more about the park's trees than just about anybody else. He created a map that charts every single one of the roughly 20,000 trees. "Looking over Glen Span, I can count 1-2-3-4-5 — at least five — fresh cuts of mature trees," he says, also noting the number of tree crews. The city's Parks & Recreation Department, which looks out for street trees as well as those in parks, went on alert way before Sandy arrived.

Key:

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.
