These pictures of the planetary nebula Abell 30, (a.k.a. A30), show among the clearest views ever before gotten of an unique phase of advancement for these objects. The inset image on the right is a close-up view of A30 showing X-ray data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory in purple and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data showing optical emission from oxygen ions in orange. Left wing is a larger view showing optical and X-ray data from the Kitt Peak National Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton, respectively. In this image the optical data show emission from oxygen (orange) and hydrogen (green and blue), and X-ray emission is colored purple. A planetary nebula-- so called because it appears like a planet when seen with a little telescope-- is formed in the late phase of the advancement of a sun-like star.

NASA Rover Providing New Weather and Radiation Data About Mars

PASADENA, Calif. -- Observations of wind patterns and natural radiation patterns on Mars by NASA's Curiosity rover are helping experts better understand the environment on the Red Planet's surface. Scientist using the car-sized mobile lab have recognized transient whirlwinds, mapped winds in relation to slopes, tracked daily and seasonal modifications in air pressure, and connected balanced modifications in radiation to daily atmospheric modifications. The understanding being acquired about these processes helps experts translate evidence about ecological modifications on Mars may have brought about conditions beneficial for life. Throughout the first 12 weeks after Curiosity landed in a location named Gale Crater, a worldwide team of researchers examined data from more than 20 atmospheric events with a minimum of one feature of a whirlwind taped by the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) instrument.

Key:

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.

MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. -- To honor the astronauts and brave members of the NASA family who gave their lives in the pursuit of space exploration and service to our nation, NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif. , will will hold a Day of Remembrance Ceremony in the Ames Exploration Center on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013. The Exploration Center also will unveil an exhibit to pay tribute to NASA Astronaut and STS-107 space shuttle Columbia Mission Specialist, Kalpana Chawla, a friend and colleague to the Ames community during her tenure as an astronaut candidate. Ames employees and ceremony participants are invited to hear remarks from Ames Center Director S. Pete Worden, see a presentation about Chawla by former Ames colleagues, see a video featuring Columbia, and observe a moment of silence.
